YOGA

Ed Fellows has over 20 years experience of yoga and meditation. He worked for many years with Diane Long and Sophy Hoare, both students of Vanda Scaravelli.

Ed places an emphasis on working from where you already are rather than trying to achieve a pre-set goal. Challenging popular views of yoga, Ed emphasises movement rather than position or pose. This is because yoga positions can easily conform to ideas about how we should be rather than how we are. We can therefore find that positions can be held at the expense of free movement. This holding can limit present awareness and the ability to be informed by new experiences. Having said this, mindfully practised positions, or asanas, can create the secure feelings of holding or being held, and therefore provide the support and awareness necessary for integrated movement.

The way we move is both a reflection of and a way into our thinking and emotional life. So, as we start to move with greater ease we can experience more ease in other aspects of our selves.

Awareness of the movements between needing to hold oneself and allowing oneself to be held is central to Ed’s approach. To bring focus to these movements, he uses the principles described by Vanda Scaravelli, which are the relationships between the spine, the breath and gravity. Practice helps to sense the qualities of movement between these “three friends”. With sensing comes understanding that is both felt and thought. This awareness facilitates fluid movement as we navigate with more sensitivity through our shared and dynamic world.
